Andrew Norman Wilson, Leticia Ramos and Marta Valverde in Curtocircuíto 2022
NewsCurtocircuíto returns to Santiago de Compostela from the 1st to the 9th of October. The festival celebrates its nineteenth edition with a programme that includes internationally renowned creators, recognized for their ground-breaking and transdisciplinary contributions.
This year PULSAR and TERRA, the two sections focusing on emerging artists who have already proven their worth through their highly personal output, are dedicated to two artists who blur the lines between film and other disciplines: renowned North American Andrew Norman Wilson, whose work can be found in the collections of the MOMA in New York, Whitney Museum, Pompidou Centre, etc., and Galician artist Marta Valverde.
As a meeting point between the non-competitive sections and the A/V shows, and always in line with the festival's vocation to integrate the arts, there is a special session focusing on Brazilian artist Letícia Ramos, in collaboration with curator Marta Ramos-Yzquierdo.
SECCIÓN PULSAR
“ANDREW NORMAN WILSON: FROM THE MOMA TO NUMAX”
In Andrew Norman Wilson's work the word “experimental” takes on its full meaning: by playing with the new values of music as well as experimenting with their meanings and potentialities, he is one of the few contemporary filmmakers who really brings something new to the language of film.
Curtocircuíto has selected nine films by this Los Angeles-based artist and director, which will be screened at Sala Numax in Santiago de Compostela (Concepción Arenal, 9) on Friday 7 and Saturday 8 October at 7.45pm.
Andrew Norman Wilson has taken part in festivals such as Sundance, the New York Film Festival and Rotterdam. His work can be found in collections such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Pompidou Centre, and they have been exhibited at LUMA Arles, MoMA PS1 and the Gwangju and Berlin Biennials. Wilson has taught at UCLA, SAIC and Cooper Union, and has lectured at Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, and Yale Universities. His work has appeared in Artforum, ArtReview, BOMB, Frieze, The New Yorker, and Wired. He has published articles in Artforum, e-flux and Paris Review.
SPECIAL SESSION LETÍCIA RAMOS
“LETÍCIA RAMOS: EVERYTHING SEEMS VERY IMPOSSIBLE”
Curtocircuíto will dedicate its special section to Brazilian artist Letícia Ramos in whose work we can find glimpses of Werner Herzog and Ben Rivers.
In her oeuvre, Leticia Ramos explores the limits of the production and exegesis of analogue image. She does this through photographic and filmic works, installations, objects, publications, and performance art.
Her work is directed towards the aesthetic intersections between documentary and fiction, taking place in natural as well as imaginary landscapes, between historical facts and invented characters. Through it, she investigates the relationship between graphic memory and the nature of the abstract and the spectral.
Ramos starts from rigorous technical and formal processes to emulate certain aspects of the scientific expeditions through which she leads the viewer, exploring ambiguous and timeless objects and themes. To this end, she constructs ingenious photographic devices (cameras, models, scenarios) which are in turn used as tools of speculation, representation, and construction of geographical and poetic territories.
Together with curator Marta Ramos-Yzquierdo, the Brazilian artist will be performing, for the first time in Spain, ten of her main artistic pieces divided into two sessions. The events will take place on Wednesday 5 and Thursday 6 October at 21.30h in Numax in Santiago de Compostela.
TERRA SECTION
"MARTA VALVERDE, OUTSTANDING ARTIST OF THE GALICIAN TERRA SECTION".
Marta Valverde describes her own output as art made in the gaps. This Galician artist starts from autobiography to deal with themes such as precariousness, violence, work, or the problem of representation from a feminist perspective: "I play with the filmic image of live cinema and documentaries, always seduced by hybridisation and impure forms".
Marta Valverde will present a selection of her films at Curtocircuíto, including Cosas locas (2022), in which a 26-year-old girl called Marina starts working as a prostitute and spends a large part of her time answering the questions of people interested in going on a date with her. A live cinema event about sex work, precariousness, and art.
This programme, as part of the "Terra" section, will take place at Sala Numax in Santiago de Compostela on Wednesday 5 and Thursday 6 October at 7.45pm.
Co-creator of the space Fuck this Studio in Vigo, Valverde combines the production of her own audio-visual pieces with her job as a VJ in musical events, performances, and theatre.
